From dermal fillers to anti-wrinkle treatments, lip filler to chin sculpting, sometimes a medical treatment is the best way to deal with wrinkles and volume loss. Our resident cosmetic doctor, Dr Nik Davies is ready to create a tailored treatment plan that will deliver on your aesthetic goals.
Anti-wrinkle injections are used to relax the facial muscles that cause wrinkles and deep furrows. In conjunction with dermal fillers they can be used to correct volume loss, producing a natural and balanced look and to make you look and feel younger.
Anti-wrinkle injections are simple, quick, non-surgical treatments that can reduce lines and wrinkles in the upper face. The injections can treat crow’s feet, forehead lines and the vertical frown (‘glabellar’) lines between the eyebrows. Anti-wrinkle injections are different from dermal fillers both in the way they work and in their composition. Anti-wrinkle injections contain a protein that causes the injected facial muscle to relax, helping to smooth lines and wrinkles in the areas where they’re injected. Most dermal fillers, on the other hand, are gels that mimic a naturally occurring sugar compound in our skin that attracts moisture and creates volume. Dermal fillers will show instant results, while anti-wrinkle injections deliver rapid, noticeable improvements within one to two days. While both products are temporary, dermal fillers can last up to 24 months, while anti-wrinkle injections last between three and four months. Anti-wrinkle injections relax only the muscles beneath the lines where product has been injected and the muscles responsible for other aspects of your facial expression stay active. If you have no further treatments, the muscles return to normal and lines gradually go back to how they looked before treatment.
Anti-wrinkle Injections FAQs
How do anti-wrinkle injections work?
Anti-wrinkle injections target one of the underlying causes of frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines, the repeated muscle contractions from frowning, squinting, smiling and raising the eyebrows over the years. Dr Nik will inject these muscles to temporarily reduce muscle activity and you will begin to notice a visible smoothing of the frown lines between your brows, your crow’s feet lines and your forehead lines.
Where can I have anti-wrinkle injections?
Anti-wrinkle injections are most commonly used on the wrinkles between the eyebrows (glabella) to eradicate the horizontal lines of the forehead. They can also be used on crow’s-feet area to elevate eyebrows and to make the face more symmetrical. On the lower part of the face ‘bunny lines’ (lines on the nose), jaw-line, chin and neck may also be treated. They can even be used to treat excessive sweating.
When will I see results?
You may begin to notice results within 24 to 48 hours, with results lasting up to 4 months for moderate to severe frown lines.
How long does the treatment take?
The injection process takes 10 – 15 minutes. Dr Nik will discuss your treatment goals and perform a facial analysis to determine the appropriate treatment areas for you.
Dermal fillers are injectable gels that restore volume to areas of the face. They contain a substance that replicates the actions of a naturally occurring molecule in the body, attracting and holding water to assist with skin hydration. They are injected below the skin’s surface to provide more youthful contours and smoother skin. Dermal fillers can be used ‘plump up’ small areas such as the lips and around the brows and ‘re-volumise’ larger areas like the cheeks and jawline. They’re sometimes used in conjunction with anti-wrinkle injections, which relax facial muscles, or with other treatments that restore skin tone, to rejuvenate the whole face.
Dermal fillers produce instant results – a typical first procedure takes between 15 and 30 minutes – and you should be able to return to your daily activities right away. Dermal fillers are usually well tolerated and durable, lasting from 9 to 24 months, depending on the product used. We use dermal fillers that also contain an anaesthetic, which can reduce discomfort during injection.
Dermal Filler FAQs
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are a gel made from a natural complex sugar, that when injected into the dermis, gives volume to the skin. The filler helps to improve wrinkle lines and restore volume to areas affected by the ageing process or weight loss by attracting water to the area that it was injected. When combined with anti-wrinkle injections, they play a major role in rejuvenating and reshaping the face without having to undergo surgery.
How long does dermal filler treatment last?
How long they last will depend on how your body reacts, where they have been injected and the type of filler used, but most dermal fillers will last between six to 18 months. As a guide, more active areas, such as lips, will break down the product at a quicker rate, whereas less active areas, such as the cheeks, will last longer.
What areas are they used to treat?
Dermal fillers can be used to treat the area under the eyes (tear troughs), mid face (cheeks), marionette lines, nasolabial folds, lower face (jawline) and also during lip enhancements, chin augmentation and non-surgical nose jobs.
When will I see the results?
The result of dermal filler injections are visible immediately.
Do dermal fillers injections hurt?
There may be a slight discomfort during treatment. This is minimised with the application of anaesthetic cream before treatment and to alleviate as much discomfort as possible, fillers contain a pre-mixed local anaesthetic.
Lip enhancement is undertaken by strategically injecting dermal filler into parts of the lip and surrounding lip areas to enhance the shape, add volume to and make the lips more symmetrical. In some cases it will even reduce the occurrence of wrinkles that surround the mouth and can make the skin less susceptible to wrinkles forming. By replacing the volume loss that occurs naturally with ageing, we can also assist in making the lips look more youthful.
Enhancing the lips is not always about just enhancing to the vermilion border (red part of the lips). Filling around the mouth may be just as important as filling the lips themselves. For example, correcting the fine upper lip lines, or lifting the corners of the mouth can all be just as important as enhancement of the lips themselves. Correcting one without the other can lead to an imbalance in the overall appearance of the mouth.
Dr Nik aims to enhance your lips so that they are proportional to the rest of the face, as well as the top lip being proportional to the lower lip. He believes that your lips should be natural-looking and enhancing your beauty.
